One fine day, you’re asked to lead a project and manage the end-to-end delivery — from project initiation all the way to production deployment.

So, where do you start?

What I’m about to share is based on my own experience as a TDM managing projects both big and small. I’ll focus on the essentials — a practical blend of project management fundamentals and the technical know-how needed to successfully deliver a project and manage its many stakeholders.

Understanding the Scope and Objectives

Every project begins with clarity. Before diving in, I make sure I fully understand what problem we’re solving, why it matters, and what success looks like.
This usually involves:

  • Reviewing the business case or initial brief
  • Identifying key stakeholders and their expectations
  • Understanding the scope boundaries — what’s in, and equally important, what’s out

Early alignment at this stage prevents confusion and rework later in the project.

Setting Up the Foundation

Once the objectives are clear, I focus on setting up the project structure — essentially building the “engine” that will drive delivery.
This includes:

  • Defining the project plan and milestones
  • Establishing governance and communication channels
  • Assembling the project team and clarifying roles and responsibilities
  • Setting up the tools and environments for collaboration (e.g., Teams)

The goal here is to ensure everyone knows how we’ll work and how progress will be tracked.

Solution Design and Technical Alignment

This is where the technical aspect starts to take shape. I work closely with the architects, business analysts, and SMEs to:

  • Validate the solution design against business requirements
  • Ensure alignment with enterprise standards and security guidelines
  • Identify integration points, dependencies, and potential risks early on

Technical alignment at this stage helps prevent surprises during development or testing.

Execution and Delivery

With a clear plan and design in place, the project moves into execution. My focus during this phase is on delivery discipline and communication:

  • Tracking progress against the plan and managing deviations
  • Coordinating across teams (development, testing, infrastructure)
  • Conducting regular status updates and risk reviews
  • Managing scope changes and ensuring decisions are documented
  • Consistency in communication and progress tracking builds trust with stakeholders.

Testing and Quality Assurance

Before going live, I ensure proper end-to-end testing — including functional, performance, and integration tests.
I emphasize:

  • Test planning and clear entry/exit criteria
  • Early involvement of testers during design and build phases
  • Regular test status reporting and defect management

The goal is not just to meet requirements, but to deliver a stable and reliable system.

Go-Live and Post-Implementation

When deployment approaches, planning is key. I work with technical teams to ensure:

  • A deployment checklist and rollback plan are ready
  • All approvals and sign-offs are in place
  • Monitoring and support are active immediately after go-live

Post-implementation, I lead a review session to capture lessons learned and improvement areas for future projects.

Leadership and Stakeholder Management

Keeping stakeholders informed, managing expectations, and maintaining team morale are just as important as the technical delivery itself.

Strong leadership ensures that even when challenges arise, the team stays focused and motivated.
